Introduction:
This course covers one of the Core Learning Areas for Year 9 students.
The Visual Arts develop students' conceptual thinking within a range of practices. At Kaikoura High School this includes drawing, painting, printmaking, design and at senior level can include photography. Students explore, refine and communicate ideas as they connect thinking, imagination, senses and feelings to create works and respond to the works of others. Artists and art history are included as this allows students to observe and learn about a range of artists, artworks and theories in the arts.
Our school is a Year 7 to 13 high school and so the Year 9 course is designed with this in mind. It is expected that students will build on skills introduced in junior school years and will arrive at a common level of skill and understanding.
Students will also have the routines within the Art classroom reinforced.
At Year 9 the course theme is based on symmetry and pattern within faces and nature with an emphasis on Ta Moko.
This course gives students a good grounding to continue on a pathway towards Visual Arts in Year 10.
Outcomes:
Students will learn about Ta Moko, what it means and some of the cultural significance of it. They will then apply the knowledge gained about the types of patterns used to create their own design which will then be done in both a print and paint media.
Some students will also go on to do a portrait drawing that makes use of the skills they will have developed with the homework tasks.

Stationery Requirements & Supplies:
Students are required to have a 2B6 exercise book. If the student did Art at Kaikoura High School in Years 7 & 8 then they are to use the book they had for those years. It will have all the relevant information and tasks from prior learning in it and is a valuable resource for them.
Students are also required to have a 20 page A4 clearfile for homework.
A 2B pencil, eraser and pencil sharpener of their own.
All other materials will be provided.

Homework:
Aims:
- 1. Practice to raise ability and therefore self confidence.
- 2. Work habits to prepare students for further study.
- 3. Increased focus on drawing as a result of consistent, feedback from evaluations.
Homework should be consistent across all classes. Students complete 30 minutes per week from a booklet of images or set projects each term. Booklets and paper are supplied at Year 9. If lost, replacements are $1.00. Demonstrations will be done for students who need help. Students may spend over 30 minutes per week if they wish. All students are asked to record the time they do spend on the work.
Class Tasks:
Tasks may be introduced verbally and can include use of smart board media. Students will also be given written instructions and supporting images and reminders on the board. They will be given demonstrations and 'how-to' steps from the teacher.
We have high expectations of students and expect them to complete work doing their personal best.
Assessments:
Students' work is assessed against the same criteria that will appear in the reports to be sent home.
Students are encouraged to use their own initiative and apply themselves in a mature, responsible manner.
Assessment Criteria:
Assessments are graded on the following criteria. The standards we use are set at a national level. We check our judgements with colleagues at other schools as frequently as practicable given our isolation.
N = Not yet met
Meaning that the quality and/or quantity produced by the student is not sufficient yet to meet the standard at this level.
E = Developing/emerging
Meaning that the student has produced some work that shows promise but still shows room for improvement.
U = Usually demonstrates
Meaning that the student is managing to meet most of the criteria for this standard but has some inconsistencies to work on yet.
A = Always demonstrates
Meaning that the student has consistently demonstrated they can maintain the standard expected at this level.
Reporting:
Students will be given a Not yet met, Developing/emerging, Usually demonstrates or Always demonstrates within these strands appearing on their reports:
- Developing Practical Knowledge
- Developing Ideas
- Communicating and Interpreting
- Understanding in Context
Please Note:
| 1. | Students will have access to a wide range of visual information via the Art Departments collection of Art Books. Some books may contain material which requires maturity and or may be inappropriate for some students. The majority of resource material is provided but they can access others. It is encouraged that students use their own discretion here. |
| 2. | Students work will be used from time to time in school publications and on the school website etc. The consent for this is on their enrollment form and has been given at the time of your childs enrollment. |
