Introduction:
It is recommended that if any student is considering taking Art at this level, then they should have taken Art at Year 12 the previous year. If this is not the case then the student wishing to do NCEA Level 3 Art needs to consult with their Dean and the Head of Art before they will be considered for entry into this course.
Achievement standards that will be on offer are as follows:
3.1 (Internal) -- Research and analyse approaches within established PAINTING or DESIGN practice.
- AS 90659 PAINTING
- AS 90515 DESIGN
3.2 (Internal) -- Generate, investigate and use ideas and methods in the context of a drawing study in PAINTING or DESIGN.
- AS 90663 PAINTING
- AS 90516 DESIGN
3.3 (External Folio) -- Produce original work within PAINTING or DESIGN to show extensive knowledge of art-making methods and ideas.
- AS 90667 PAINTING
- AS 90517 DESIGN
Outcomes:
The work done for the research achievement standard is designed to inform the work that is to follow in 3.2 and then the work done in 3.2 is designed to inform the work that will be done for the external folio in 3.3.
The design field in particular has a more defined area of study in that it is based on our local Trash Fashion show. A garment is required to be made and entered in this show which is in mid June every two years. If the show is not held in the year the student is doing this course then the deadline to have the garment made will still be mid June and arrangements will need to be made to have the garment modelled and photographed at this time. The garment itself is not submitted for NCEA assessment, however, all preparation and planning forms the design process which is assessed. As well as this the garment forms a basis for other tasks which go towards the external assessment.
Painting will have artist models and subject matter forming the basis of study.

Stationery Requirements & Supplies:
Students are required to have a 2B6 exercise book. If a student did Art at Kaikoura High School in &ears 7 - 11 and 12 then they are to use the book they had for those years. It will have all the relevant information and tasks from prior learning in it and is a valuable resource for them. If they do not have it any more, then they will need to get a new one.
Students are also required to have an A3 clear file for submission of NCEA assessments.
A 2B pencil, eraser and pencil sharpener of their own.
Students from Year 10 up are expected to purchase their own A3 Art Pad. The Art Department does carry a stock of these for purchase.
It is also recommended senior students purchase a range of other materials of their own such as water colour pencils and crayons etc.
Homework:
The focus of homework in the senior school is:
- 1. To extend and expand on work done in class.
- 2. To finish work in time to meet deadlines.
- 3. To catch up with work missed due to extracurricular activities or other planned or unplanned absences.
- 4. To demonstrate mature, independent work habits & the capacity for students to set their own goals.
Homework should be managed by the individual student and to meet their individual need to meet deadlines. A diary is kept in the class in which students are required to fill out each time they take work home. Work should be home no longer than three school days and then brought back, whether it has had anything done on it or not. This policy relates to the management of authenticity issues.
Authenticity:
At senior school students and parents are required to sign a declaration of authenticity for the following reasons.
Students need to have their own work and ability assessed. As well as this the skills required in Art are best learnt through practice by the individual needing to gain the skills. For these reasons it is vital that the homework that is done is done by the student.
If a parent, guardian, sibling or family friend, etc is able to help the student, this is encouraged, but please make sure that a demonstration is done on a separate piece of work NOT on the student's own work.
Achievement Standards:
An outline of the course structure and how each achievement standard relates to the overall year's theme and outcomes will be given out at the very beginning of the year. As each achievement standard is started a full set of task instructions will be given to each student. These instructions will include a list of resources that are available to help them complete the tasks, how long they should take, and possibly exemplars of past work done by students both at this school and around the country. A list of exactly what is required to be submitted will also be included along with a cover sheet for the submission which students are required to sign and date.
Assessment Submissions:
Internal assessments are submitted in a clearfile. The external assessment is a folio of work consisting of two panels of A1 sized card hinged together along the long side.
Deadlines:
It is vital that deadlines are met at this level. If for some reason a student can see in advance that they are going to struggle to meet a deadline for an internal assessment due to extracurricular activities sanctioned by the school or illness, then they may apply for an extension. If this is not requested before the due date they will NOT be granted any extension.
The external folio deadline does not allow for an extension. This must be submitted on the date stated, no exceptions.
Grade Descriptions
N = Not Achieved
A = Achieved
M = Merit
E = Excellence
Reporting:
Students will be given a grade as described: Not Achieved, Achieved, Merit or Excellence if the achievement standard has been completed and assessed at time of reporting.
If not, then they will be given a progress grade towards the achievement standards and comments that reflect how well they are working towards the achievement standards currently being worked on in class.
Please Note:
| 1. | Students will have access to a wide range of visual information via the Art Departments collection of Art Books. Some books may contain material which requires maturity and or may be inappropriate for some students. The majority of resource material is provided but they can access others. It is encouraged that students use their own discretion here. |
| 2. | Students work will be used from time to time in school publications and on the school website etc. The consent for this is on their enrollment form and has been given at the time of your childs enrollment. |
