Welcome!
Red Sussex cattle are a rare breed of cattle that came to New Zealand in 1970. The Sussex breed originally came from the UK where they were used as draft animals. As the need for draft animals became less and cattle largely gave way to horses, the breed was gradually adapted for beef production. The Sussex cattle are fine coated with a brick red colour and a distinctive white tail tassel. They have extra sweat glands and a higher hair count which make them able to live in extreme climates. These cows are well known for their placid temperament but can be very stubborn. The average Sussex cow can measure up to 135cm at the wither and weigh around 585kg, whereas the bull can reach a height of 145cm at the wither and weigh around 950kg. Sussex cattle have adjusted well to the farming conditions in the South Island although only a few herds of Sussex cattle can be found throughout the country. Simon Pharazyn is breeding up the herd with a view to having female stock available for purchase. In the future he hopes to see more herds appear around the country.
