Gym User Information

Gym users are entitled to: A gym programme designed to suit your training needs which you will be taken through by our Trainers (see staff page). We are happy to review your programme every 5-6 weeks as required. Personal training is available from our trainers, but will be a direct arrangement between the trainer and the member. The gym does not set pricing or arrange appointments for personal training.

Casual Gym Users: Casual gym users are restricted to using the gym during the hours when the gym staff are present.

Towel: Bring a towel with you to the gym to help maintain hygiene standards and protect equipment.

Water Bottle: Take a water bottle to the gym. There is a cooler downstairs to refill from. Ideally, drink before, during and after a workout. Take small, frequent sips instead of huge gulps. By the time you feel thirsty you are partially dehydrated. Water is a good natural fluid replacement but as an alternative, sports drinks will help to keep you hydrated.

Clothing: Wear light and comfortable clothing in which you can move easily. Wearing the correct footwear is important to help support the ankles and knees, also helping to prevent possible injuries.

Pregnancy: Please inform the instructors if you are pregnant, as the exercises mey need to be adapted to suit. It is important that you stay hydrated throughout the workout, so you do not overheat. You may be more flexible than usual, so stretch and exercise gently.

Warm Up: Warming up prepares the body for action and reduces the likelihood of injury as body tissues become warmer and more pliable, which decreases the incidence of muscle strains and joint damage. Also, it increases your heart rate gradually rather than with a jolt, putting less stress on your heart muscle.

Stretching: Stretching is an essential part of any fitness programme, particularly after strengthening exercises to prevent freshly exercised muscles from contracting. Other benefits are that it reduces muscle tension, prevents limitations on mobility because of age, improves body awareness, promotes blood circulation and increases metabolism. It also decreases the incident of injury as tissues acquire increased elasticity.

Technique: Remember technique is more important than weight. Failure of an exercise is a loss of form or technique. Therefore when you are no longer aligned, balanced or co-ordinated, STOP!

Cool Down: When you have been exercising, muscles assist the heart in pumping the blood back around the body so ensure you cool down correctly to bring the heart rate down slowly and safely.

Back-Care: Practise good back care when in the gym. When lifting, take a stable position, bend from your knees, maintain the natural hollow in the base of your back, use your abdominal muscles to stabilise your spine and use your legs, not your back to lift, keeping the weight close to your body.
