    Eco Council Events

Following is a list of events that have currently occurred or that are going to happen in our school:

    This Year So Far

    • 20 April Green up Clean up: This was a fundraising event run by the Eco Council in conjunction with the KHS Fundraising Group. Students signed up and got sponsorship from friends and family. On the day, sponsored students took part in an environmental action plan which ranged from planting native herb seeds and vegetable seeds, gardening in an area around school and the community, painting over graffiti and cleaning. Students were encouraged to come up with their own action plan and to complete it. There were prizes and awards to be won.
    • 14 May Fundraiser Eco Disco: Black and White Theme: This was a very successful event designed for students in Years 7, 8 and 9. It was held at the St Josephs Hall. There was a disco ball, fancy dress (animal theme) and prizes for dancing.
    • Introduction of sustainability rubbish bins: On Wednesday 15 September 2010 the new wheelie bins came in. They are clearly labelled which bin is which. There are 12 blue bins for food scraps and 12 yellow for rubbish. Students have been encouraged to dispose of their waste to make the school a better, cleaner, greener place. The project has been underway for several months and wouldn't be able to happen without Rachel Vaughan, Stephen Horrell, Andy Delaney, Pub Charities and Bob Goodyer (our amazing caretaker). Thank you for all your hard work.

    Coming Up

    • Tui Garden Grow Off: Tui garden products are holding the great NZ schools Grow Off. There is $1500 worth of garden tools up for grabs. We are welcoming any support in this project, and specifically would welcome any donations of vegetable seeds. The competition finishes at the end of October. In conjunction with the Grow Off, the Eco Council along with Mr Welsman (Agriculture teacher) and Tony Guthrie (groundsman) have been working hard on restoring the greenhouse on the school site. We aim to have it fully restored and in working condition by the end of September.
    • Gardening after the Quake: Students have decided to join an initiative being organised by Mrs Shirley McEwan, a local Kaikoura gardener. This involves Kaikoura people supplying plants to residents in Kaikoura affected by the 11 September earthquake. Mrs McEwan spoke at a recent school assembly, describing how Kaiapoi residents have lost their gardens to mud and rubble during the liquefaction process caused by the earthquake. The Eco Council have decided to join the initiative and will start potting cuttings, seedlings and seeds. Early in December there will be collection points around the town and the plants will be distributed in Kaiapoi. Kaiapoi people will advise of the areas of greatest need.
